Book It Reading Program For Homeschoolers

I'm reading yet another lighthearted poetry book to the kids these days. I find that we actually enjoy the stuff when we don't have to cut through thirty-eight layers of meaning just to grasp the gist of the poem. Poetry is also a lot better when the subject is food--take for example this small excerpt by David Canzoneri and Bill Martin Jr.:

I love pizza so much I could write a poem about it myself. That's why when I saw that Pizza Hut has a BOOK IT program for homeschoolers, I signed my kids right up. There's nothing more important than gettin' my pizza fix encouraging kids to read. Besides, the whole thing reminds me of the thrill of filling up my BOOK IT button before my older brother could recite the words "MY SISTER REIGNS SUPREME."

Wow! I remember fond Book It memories of my brother and I getting our personal pan pizzas when we were in school. Our family never went out to eat so getting pizza was a HUGE treat. I can't believe the program is still around.
My oldest son, who is now 11, was in public school for Kindergarten. I remember how excited he was the first time he brought home a Pizza Hut Book-It coupon! Once he got one, he kept right on getting them and he was always just as excited.
I didn't realize that they did that for homeschoolers until I came across it in a blog about 3 years ago. Since then, I make sure to sign up every year! It's still always such a big deal around here when we hand those out. :)
We also do the Barnes and Noble summer reading program every summer. We are avid readers and BN is one of favorite stores, so it's a good summer reading motivator! :D
