Recommended Resource For Kids Learning To Read: We Both Read

Bookmark and Share

Helping my children transition from "not reading" to "reading" was by far one of the most magical moments of mothering.

It was also one of the most excruciating.

There were times I'd be snuggled up close with my son, just waaaaiiiiiittttting foooooorrrrr the neeeeeeeeeeext wooooooooooord to be said.

Stabbing a fork in my ear would have been less painful.

And yet, working through a stack of choppy early reader books is just part of the package.

Or is it?

I ran across a series that rethinks the beginner books for kids. It's called We Both Read, and the layout of each page allows for both parent and child to...read.

Here's how it works:

We Both Read books feature pages that alternate in reading difficulty. The left-hand pages, which you read, have more complex text. The right-hand pages, which your child reads, feature text that is appropriate for your child's reading ability.

I found these books to be far more palatable for both of us to sit through. Here are a few reasons why:

  • The stories have more depth

  • The story moves along, thus lowering frustration

  • The reading experience promotes teamwork between parent and child

  • The child gets to hear a more complex sentence structure and vocabulary

The books are also perfect for an older child to read alongside a younger child who is just beginning to read.

These books were a big hit in my home when my second son was learning to read. Because of that, I asked the publisher for some copies to give away, and they sent me six! The titles and levels are as follows:

My Day (Level K)

We All Sleep (Level K-1)

Just Five More Minutes (Level 1)

About Space (Level 1-2)

A Pony Named Peanut (Level 2)

Endangered Animals (Level 2)

So take a look at those books (each link will give you a close-up of the level of text) and let me know if there's one you'd prefer. I'll pick some winners in the future at some appointed time, still unknown to me.

This series of books is what Works For Me This Wednesday, now over at We Are THAT Family.

Found your blog through WFMW. These books look great--I have a 4.5 year old who is so close to reading, but just not quite there. I love "We All Sleep." looks perfect! carlee @ missiodeicc. org

Oh, wow! My daughter is just getting into reading and spelling (we recently borrowed Akeela and the Bee from the library). She loves to be read to, but gets a little bored with long chapters. She's beginning to pick out words, but she's not ready for a whole book.

Thanks for posting about this program, and definitely sign me up for the giveaway!

Definitely "My Day" would work for me and my four year old.

Thanks for popping by my blog. Anyone who appreciates a good Brady Bunch comment is a friend of mine.

We All Sleep!
My youngest is just learning and learning long vowels and he finds it discouraging that he can't read very many books yet. I think he'd love that one!

Oh I love this....I would def. be interested in the Just Five More Minutes (or any first grade level) for my daughter.

I like your "stabbing a fork in my ear" reference.....I usually use, "I'd rather pull every eyelash out of my head" statement. HAHAHHAHAHHAH!

Have a great day....thanks for the awesome giveaway too!
Peace

ps. I am having a giveaway today too if you feel like popping over to my world.

What a fabulous and timely idea. We are just at the phase now where Froggy is trying to read some on her own. She mostly just memorizes the easy readers rather than reading so this would help on both fronts. Off to the library for us.

Your post made me laugh.. sounds just like my annaleah.. although she gets distracted between words also.. it can be very painful for me. She is finally starting to really catch on.. thankfully!

Neat books! I take my niece (5) and nephews (6 and 8) on individual reading dates. I spoil them with hot cocoa and a cookie for some one-on-one attention w/Aunt E. I get to watch their reading progress month by month--such a joy! (I'd take any of those titles.)

Very good books! We would love the K one for sure for my daughter!
Found you through wfmw.

I've used these books in the classroom, and they make reading so much less painful! Since my munchkin is little, I'd love the K level book - I had to leave my book set with my classroom :(

All of those titles are new to me. We'd love "Five More Minutes" or the space one. I have a Star-Wars-crazed five year old who would be very into them. Or any of those books, really. Thanks for the giveaway and the heads up on some new books.

Wow. Can't pick one! ;-) I think Just Five More Minutes and a Pony named Peanut would be great story books for my kids; I also like About Space although I couldn't see the inside to get an idea of how difficult it would be.
This is a great idea - my kids love to be read to, but I'd love for them to start reading more of the words for themselves, which many books don't lend themselves to.

LOVE this!!! I've never even heard of these before! It's a wonderful idea!!

I'd really like
Five More Minutes
for my son since he says that to me ~1,947 times before bedtime. ;)

Thanks so much!!

This is a great idea. I've kind of been doing something similar w/ my 3.5yr old lately. It'd be nice to read a book that was meant to be read that way. Our lil guy is just beginning to sound out simple words. Its a start!

My son is in 2nd grade and it is painful sometimes to listen to him read. I need to look at the library to see if they have any of these books, or anything similar.

I'd love either the About Space or Endangered Animals

Thanks for the info!

"My Day" would be perfect for us. I couldn't get the view of the book to come up...my computer is weird sometimes, but I'm hoping it's a book about how hard a Mom's day is so my 4 year old can have a greater appreciation of mom. Something tells me this may be fanciful thinking...

My kindergartener LOVES "We Both Read" books, but we don't have any of these. I think she'd get a kick out of "5 More Minutes." :)

I am learning so much from you -- I'm going to be joining the ranks of the home-schooling Moms when this school year ends, and I am so excited by all that you share. My sons would love to read any one of these, but probably mostly "A Pony Named Peanut" or "Endangered Animals".

Thank you! I used that series of books with my oldest--perfect timing to run across it again now that my 2nd is at that excruciating time, too. (And I'm sooooo glad I'm not the only one who has the mix of "Hooray! Learning to read!" and "How painful is this going to be?!")

I'll have to look for them again at our library--I know my son would love the "About Space" one.
