Applying Sticky Medicine To Kids
I can't count the number of times I've gone to fix dinner and whatdoyaknow, my hands smelled like Desitin. Mmmm.
I'm on my third kid now, and have been applying diaper rash cream to red bottoms nonstop since 2001. It took me seven years of having "Desitin Hands" before this little trick occurred to me.
I'm not a smart man, Jenny.
But now! Because I'm a problem-solving genius! I just squirt a little of the miracle stuff ONTO THE DIAPER ITSELF and then use that to gently wipe it around on the bum.
Therefore, the Desitin now no touchy my handsies. No moresies.
It's an environmentally friendly, cheapskate tip too, because it keeps me from using 37 wipes and a gallon of hot water just to get the devilish Desitin off my skin.
This works with other tube medicines as well. Most recently, I've been applying pain-relieving antiobiotic ointment DIRECTLY TO THE BAND-AID, versus squirting it on the cut itself (ouchy and unsanitary), or putting it on my finger first (messy and unsanitary) and then on the cut.
Vicks is the last in my list of medicinal nemeses. It's a little trickier since it doesn't come in a tube, but that's nothing that the inside of a kid's sock can't solve. Dip the inside of the sock in the Vicks, apply it to the foot, and then turn the sock right side out again to put it on the child.
Voila. No more sticky, stinky hands. At least not from meds.

Or you can check out the rest of my other (often) ridiculous tips as well. I've gathered quite a pile.

I have never enjoyed putting Desitin directly on with my finger, so I always use a Q-Tip. Probably not as environmentally friendly as wiping it on the diaper directly (which I've also done when no Q-Tips were available). My friend (a microbiologist!) said she always used Q-Tips, so I have ever since. (Guess I'll have to admit that I'm a germ phob., too...)
So, Does the Vick's on the feet work for adults, too?
I remember Desitin hands. Lasted for a little while with my first, who had non-stop monster diaper rash!
Until one day the NEW pediatrician turned me on to Aquaphor. Not only did it do miracles on her little backside (rarely ever any diaper rash after that) but the stuff is great for all sorts of skin troubles including dry hands. So, after diapering her, I adored rubbing a little onto my hands.
I still use Aquaphor for various and sundry skin stuff. Love, love, love it!
If you REALLY wanna be environmentally friendly, I would suggest cloth diapers. ;) It's not what you think! It doesn't have to be pins and rubber pants like back in our day. :)
You can't use Desitin on them, though, b/c of the cod liver oil in the cream. Your diapers will come out of the washer smelling like dead fish. *gag*
Tina: I'm guessing the Vicks works just as well on adults. It's miracle stuff!
Carol: I love that Aquaphor, too! Never used it on the bum, though...
Wait a minute - Vicks on the feet?! I have never heard of this.
What does it do?
Great tips!
Just follow the link where it says "apply to foot" and you can read all about it! It is a safe cough suppressant to use for kids. And it works well, too! Esp on the really young kids who can't have cough syrup. I use it on my older kids, too.
So simple yet so genius. When I read it I slapped my forehead...Why didn't I think of that?! Lisa~
