Recipe For Hot Chocolate

Bookmark and Share

I know, I know. You already
have a recipe for hot chocolate, and it looks something like this:

"Stir one little packet of hot chocolate mix into hot water and burn your ever-loving mouth enjoy."

Hardy har har. You crack me up.

But I know there's a growing population of those who--for health reasons--can't do the "mix" thing or the "dairy milk" thing anymore. There's also those who never seem to have the mixes around when the chocolate need arises.

This post is for y'all.

I'm even giving you two options, based on the type of chocolate you have in your home.

Hot Chocolate

2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
1 pinch salt
1 cup milk (any kind)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix sugar, cocoa and salt in large mug. Heat milk in microwave on HIGH 1 1/2 minutes or until hot. Gradually add hot milk to cocoa mixture in mug, stirring until well blended. Stir in vanilla.

Note: You can mix all of the ingredients in a saucepan and warm over medium high heat. You can also keep the cocoa warm in a crock pot.

Gift-giving note: You can mix the sugar, cocoa, and salt together to give out as a cute, homemade gift. On the tag, include these instructions: "Add 1 cup of hot milk to 3 measuring tablespoons of mix. Stir and enjoy!"

Hot Chocolate

5 ounces (scant 1 cup) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
1 quart (4 cups) milk (any kind)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine chocolate and milk; heat, whisking until chocolate is melted and milk is very hot and frothy, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla; pour into a blender, filling halfway. Blend, holding lid in place (the hot liquid with expand), until frothy. Serve immediately.

Enjoy!

Anyone else make their own hot chocolate?

Yep. I make my own hot chocolate as well. I usually make a big batch because everyone wants it, and I personally add a shot of coffee or espresso to my own cup. I also use the natural sweetener, sucanot, in place of the sugar, and everyone LOVES it. I don't tell my guests that I have changed anything, and they rave!
Thanks for the post!!!!!

I love the name of your blog!! I ust had to stop in and let you know. Yes, I like to use grated dark chocolate. yum.. Hawaii just doesn't have that warm snuggly hot chocolate vibe very often.

I make our own hot chocolate, using a Martha Stewart recipe. For me, it's not for health reasons so much as it is just plain cheaper!

I make mine too! Once you taste the homemade, it is really kind of hard to call the packets "hot chocolate."

Not only that, but because my son has a milk allergy, I am able to make his with soy milk. I usually make a big batch for those who can have milk, and half a batch for the 2 who use soy.

And our warm tummies usually thank us afterwards!

I'm totally a packet girl. But yours does sound yummy. I think I'll get my kids to mix some up.

Milk = allergen

Yep, make the same recipe. It is the best!!!!
During the Christmas holiday, I make it more festive, which adds a little bit of not so healthy ingredients. I top it off with whipped cream and red and green sugar sprinkles. Then I hang a small candy cane on the inside edge of the mug. Gives it a hint of peppermint flavor. My kids just think it's the greatest thing ever!! Makes for fun memories. And of course, we have creatively named it, "Christmas Cocoa".

Yes! Milk is an allergen. But you can substitute soy or rice or goat milk. I didn't state that, just assumed that people with allergies or intolerances are used to making that recipe adjustment.

The trouble with mixes is that they come with dry milk which (look at my keen sense of the obvious!) can't be taken out. And I know that people w/ celiac have to be 75 kinds of careful with package mixes. As in -- they rarely can use them.

So -- homemade.

I'll make a change to the post.

Hi! I found your blog from Rocks in my Dryer and I love the title, love the blog, love the recipe! I never thought to simply melt chocolate chips in hot milk. Also, for some reason I never thought to keep hot chocolate warm in a crock pot. I am having a large luncheon in my home on Friday and I am going to set a bunch of colorful mugs by my crock pot full of hot chocolate! Thanks for the inspiration!

I make the recipe right off of the Hershey's Cocoa box. It's delicious! I could never go back to Miss Swiss what's her name. ;)

Someday I want to make home-made marshmallows to go in home-made hot chocolate.

I can dream. :)

Yes, once I tried my own hot chocolate I could never go back to the packets. I love Tina Marie's idea about cinnamon and pepper. I'll try that next time!

Oh, RainyPM, I actually had a recipe for home-made marshmallows that I never got around to trying. I think I threw it out, but I'll look...

A friend is gluten and lactose intolerant and makes her own hot chocolate and mixes it with hazelnut milk. Drinkable Nutella!
