A Peek At My Books. And My Craziness.

Bookmark and Share

Every once in a while, when the sun shines in the Pacific Northwest--approximately 3.7 days a year--I follow up on a meme. Julie, whose boys match mine in testosterone and geekiness alike, asked me to grab the nearest book, turn to page 56, and type the fifth sentence.

I got skillz for that.

But determining the nearest book in a house that looks like mine (pictured) requires a high-powered electrical ruler that measures to the 0.0000000000nth degree.

Yeah, whatever Lisa.

So I'll bend the rules a bit and invite you into my crazy, book-filled life. I did choose books that I own versus my usual "library hogging" lists. And, I picked five. 'Cuz one just isn't enough.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

"Whoosh, swoosh--too-whit, too-woo, bats dwell here and hoot owls too."

Sounds a lot like *my* house.

Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot

"Have I an object, Lord, below...which would divide my heart with Thee?"

Yep. One sentence of Jim Elliot's says more than 37,876 of mine.

Getting Along With Almost Anybody: The Complete Personality Book

"I froze."

Coincidentally, that's an apt description of most of my social interactions.

The Far Side Gallery 5

(Sign on bus says, "Roadkill Tours.")

"As you can see, most of these things are jackrabbits, but keep your eyes peeled for armadillo as well. We're about five miles now from the dead steer."

I spent a good portion of my teen years cuddled up with Gary Larson. Might explain why I was never asked on dates.

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

(In reference to married couples, and how they differ from dating couples when going out to eat.)

"You'd think they went there to eat!"

Hello? An uninterrupted meal? OF COURSE THAT'S WHY I GO ON DATES. Once a year.

What's the fifth sentence on page 56 of the book closest to YOU?

Thanks for stopping by my post about Jim E. He was quite a guy. His family home is still owned by family--in fact I was just there for dinner. That house holds 75 years of memories for me. I spent lots of time there as a girl, as Jim's only sister was my age and we were very close.

My neighbors have two little ones from China. They are so adorable. Every time I am in the drive way, the little boy comes running and hugs my legs. Love it!

I am the adoptive mom of a Korean child (who is now 49!)

Stop by again sometime. I am running out of things to blog about, but will keep it going for a while longer.

This made me smile knowing that there is someone else who can put "Shadow of the Almighty" and "The Far side" together on a list! :)

"A standard TTL gate has a fan-out of 10." (Computer Design and Architecture, 3rd ed.) For the record, it's my husband's book. I'm not that geeky! Although I do love Gary Larson. Far Side and Calvin and Hobbs made up a good portion of my middle school years.

Jotham's Journey (Can't wait to read this this Advent)

And sometimes they don't understand just because they don't believe that God can really do what he said he'll do.

King Leopold's Ghost, Adam Hochschild, describing the harsh journey through Congo jungles:

"The perpetual noise of the rapids grew ever more oppressive."

A Fragile Stone, Michael Card, on being a fearless water walker:

"But we must never forget that it always begins with a cry for help."

Amy copied pictures and enjoyed beauty to her heart's content, and Laurie played "lord of the manor" in the most delightful style.

From the textbook "Research Methods in Educational Systems" which is equivalent to "snoooooooooore":
"The American Educational Research Association sponsors links to peer-reviewed, full-text journals that can be accessed from anywhere."

BUT! The next closest book is Jesus for President, which says (in discussion of how the people of the exodus learned new ways of looking at the Biblical commands, "And as we will see, Jesus later takes this command to its fullest spirit and intent by saying "You have heard that it is said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you..."
