Reverse Trick-Or-Treating

Bookmark and Share

Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment, but I like to take some of the glutton out of Halloween and turn it into some giving.

As a way to connect with our neighbors, we like to take our kids "reverse trick-or-treating."

Instead of spazzing around the block and begging for candy, we knock on our neighbors' doors and drop a small gift off for them.
Oh sure, I still let my kids have the usual Halloween fun.

But one of my lifelong goals
that I harp about on this-here blog involves "building community." That's just a fain-cee way of saying, "makin' friends with the folks next door."

I KNOW.

WHAT A CONCEPT.

I wrote all about the ins and outs of doing your own reverse trick-or-treating over at katu.com. And that's what works for me this Halloween season. More tips and treats over at Rocks In My Dryer.

What a great idea! I can see how this would be great for any family, regardless of whether or not they celebrate Halloween.

I like the idea! Thanks so much for sharing it. Now that my creative juices are running, I'm thinking we'll try a version of it this year. Maybe we could make little crafts/cards to hand each household or something--that's if I can get my act together in time!

What a wonderful idea! I have lived in my neighborhood for a year and I still haven't met so many people. I like the idea b/c I am trying to teach my kids to be more giving. It is SO hard because of the constant commercialism. They want to have and get everything. Thanks for the inspiration! I am not sure if I can pull this off in the next 2 days... but maybe to a few people, anyway.

Great article on katu.com, too. I'd LOVE to do this, but I won't be able to get my act together this year. Remember how Bryan does trick-or-treating, but NEVER on the right date? Well this year, the trick-or-treating day is TOMORROW -- Thursday -- NOT on Halloween, which would be logical (both because it actually Halloween AND because it is a FRIDAY). Go figure. Super idea, though. Thanks for sharing it.

Great article! thanks for sharing. I do not really like Halloween, but reverse trick or treating could get me a little more excited about it. I'll keep it in mind for next year for sure!

This is a great idea. We moved into this neighborhood in the spring, and several people have moved in after us. I'm going to give it a whirl.

Thanks for the great idea.

You see, these are the giving citizens who I like to see make comments. Not those "I hate everything" mongers who commented on the Katu article.
