Stop Drinking Soda! Oh, Nevermind.

Bookmark and Share

Heard on the radio* that it takes one hour of walking to burn off one can of soda.

As soon as I heard that, I just knew I was going to take my self-righteous self off to the keyboard to type out some Boss Of The World Told You So kind of post.

Stop drinking soda! It will rot your teeth! Make you gain weight! Ruin your budget!

But then I realized if I substituted "ice cream" (cookies, chips, cake, chocolate) for "soda," you folks drinking "pop" could easily call my kettle "fat."

There are people out there who have this amazing thing called "self-control." (Look it up! It really exists!) They can usually do one of two things:

  • Eat junk food but exercise it off
  • Eat little or no junk food
I fall into the third category of people:

  • Eat incredibly huge quantities of food and give a passing thought to working it off
That plan worked until I hit my 30s. And then someone changed the rules and forgot to tell my mouth.

I want to know which of my readers has the elusive "self-control." Then we can all type snarky, envious comments back at you. (My hubs falls into this category, btw.) As for the rest of us, what's your junk food vice?

*I was listening to the John Tesh radio program on my easy listening station. (Hey, that qualifies as music! AND good science!)

Okay. For those who want some real science, here's a few reasons to ditch the drink. But you didn't hear it from me.

I have moments of self control..well, I guess I'm better than most. I gave all that stuff up last year when I moved 15 miles (2 lane highway) to the nearest store. I never bought it, so I never had it in my house. Now that I live in 'civilization' I dont' need it. I do order a couple pizzas from Papa Johns in a crisis moment (and they are gone w/in 24 hours...and I'm the only one eating!) But I'm addicted to exercise.

I've lost 30 lbs and kept if off for nearly 6 months now. Does that count as self control, maybe. Don't like exercise, so have to put the junk food down. If I don't look at it, I do better at the store. If I don't buy it, I can't eat it. Once in awhile I will treat myself, but I usually make it a smaller version of what the "fat" me used to eat.

I'm happy to admit I'm not big fan of cakes and such sweets...and don't be shocked, but even chocolate (due to a traumatic childhood experience)! So, usually I can just say, no thanks and keep going.

However, my Coca-Cola addiction is one battle for me to overcome. I am happy to report, though, that I've not drank (drunk? drinked?)much Coke over the summer...and did drop 15 lbs. Ehhh....

Well, I don't drink soda, but I do eat m&m's by the bag. Chocolate is healthy, right? Fortunately, I do enjoy exercise but can't find time to do enough of it. My half-marathon training is helping me stay more consistent.

Hey Lisa! I love your blog and added it to my Google Reader! Great to reconnect with you.

My only salvation is that if I don't think something is very healthy to eat, I just don't buy it. If it's in the house, it WILL be consumed, usually by me and the crumbs by my family.

i'm working on self-control. does that count? we have an almost-11-month old and i've lost almost all the "baby weight" over the last three months. (took me awhile to decide i needed self-control!) just a few more pounds to go!

I would rather cut the junk food and take a walk with the family rather than exercise. lol. so that is what we have been trying to do. Sometimes that is easier said than done but we like it. And we don't beat ourselves up when we slip. It happens and we are good most of the time.

I just started working out about a month ago. When I saw how long it took me to work off ONE CAN of soda, I gave it up. Not worth it. No. way.
