Read Aloud Magic

What does this quote mean for the people in your life?

"Experts tell us that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they begin to learn to read for themselves. A thousand! That sounds daunting. But when we do the sums, it isn't as bad as we might think. Three stories a day will deliver us a thousand stories in one year alone, let alone in the four or five years prior to school. We can do it!"

Excerpt from Mem Fox's Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever.

Oh, you so hit my heart's passion on this one. I read to my babies when they were tiny infants in my arms, which I know seems like the most ludicrous thing to do. But by they time they were 6 mos, they were turning pages, and a little older, I saw their eyes looking at the words. They "got" that I was doing something there with those black squigglies. They have all done really well in school and love to read, pretty much. My favorite memories of early motherhood are rocking and reading. My kids are 21, 19 and 15 now.

I think what strikes fear into my heart is not the thought of reading 1000 stories... no, I love to read :0)

It's the reality that the kids don't want 1000 DIFFERENT stories. They want the same four stories 250 times each!
