Berry 'n' Spice Sauce
For all the ranting and raving I do against sugar (and its decidedly evil step-sisters), you'd think I was the poster child for raw celery.
Poster child for snark and sarcasm, yes. Celery, no.
But this sauce! This sauce!
It is the delight of the berry world. If I had unlimited time and money, I'd eat it daily over my highly refined pancakes and waffles. And then I'd spend the rest of my unlimited time and money getting rid of the glue that was the result of all those highly refined pancakes and waffles.
But the sauce!
We all know berries are perfect "as is." But this sauce takes those berries and kicks 'em up a notch. "Sweet" meets "sweet" in the most subtle and perfect combination.
What's this sauce for? Wicked stuff, mostly. Pancakes, waffles, French toast, angel food cake, cheesecake, frozen yogurt.
I eat mine with a spoon.
Serving spoon, that is.
The original recipe called for blueberries, but I have substituted nearly every berry with success. My most recent concoction was a shake made with a marionberry sauce and some vanilla frozen yogurt. I thought I done died and went to Burger Heaven.
I hope you enjoy downing your vitamins as much as I do with this delightful and pleasing sauce.
Berry 'n' Spice Sauce
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup water
2 cups berries, fresh or frozen
In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. Gradually stir in water until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1 minute or until thickened. Stir in berries; return to a boil. Reduce heat; cook and stir for 5 minutes. Serve warm. Yield: 1 3/4 cups
