15 Summer Activity Ideas

If any fun happens at my house, it's usually by accident. I certainly do nothing to encourage it.

And if you think I snark and snuff just on my blog? Ha! That's the Real Me.

Poor kids.

And before you send a Social Service Agent over in a Clown Suit, never fear. We do have fun on occasion. But it's usually while we're pursuing some other goal, like feeding our minds, or fueling our bods, or serving our community.

Geeks.

So if you have a few extra dollars for long-term counseling? My kids are gonna need it. That and a few free tickets to an amusement park. Such frivolity.

So here's what I have planned for our summer. And if any of it sounds a wee bit fun, then egad, let's get it off the list.

15 Summer Activity Ideas

Feeding Our Minds

  1. Attend an outdoor concert. You can usually find one that's free.
  2. Research (Oh! Stop the fun!) a local area of interest and take a field trip there.
  3. Play a new outdoor game.
  4. Leave an encouraging word somewhere - in sidewalk chalk!
  5. Read a book together as a family.

Fueling Our Bods

  1. Shop at a local farmer's market and introduce yourselves to the seller.
  2. Grow at least one thing in your yard (garden, bucket).
  3. Tour a local farm.
  4. Choose one day a week to eat vegetarian.
  5. Picnic at a park.

Serving Our Community

  1. Host a neighborhood smoothie party. Make it BYOF (bring your own fruit)! Remember to have milk-alternatives and sugar-substitutes on hand.
  2. Make a simple lemonade stand and give the drinks away.
  3. Surprise a bunch of kids at the park with Popsicles.
  4. Clean up a part of your neighborhood.
  5. Hand out chilled bottled water to the homeless or to local service workers.

And help my family out. What would you add to this list?

Have you heard of Captain Bogg and Salty---the kids-friendly pirate band?
Several of my friends with kids in the 8 and under crowd go to all their free library and park concerts. They're the kind of band that always play the same goofy songs with motions and the kids start to know all the songs and the moves and have a festive time.

No fun!? Sounds like fun to me, and I think my kids would love it. But please don't take any of it off your list! It is fun in a "do good as a family" type of way. When fun and education mix, you have a winner!

I hope to use these ideas this summer myself. :)

Have a blast of a summer!

I have not much to add to your summer fun list. However, I do have a humble suggestion...maybe you can be a big weirdo and hand out the chilled water in re-usable bottles. I think you could find some cheap ones at the 99 cent store. It could be a tad more environmental, and I think the bottle could be a nice gift for a homeless person. Hope that helps make your summer more funner-er.
