Riting Resorsuz, a.k.a. "Writing Resources"

Bookmark and Share

Now, you don't have to take a moment to comment on my fiiiiine ritin' skillz, really you don't.

(Go ahead. I'll be right here when you get back.)

(Smirk.)

But where was I? Oh yes, I was "writing."

As an avid reader, passive conversationalist, and armchair writer, I always enjoy a good turn of a phrase.

Whatever that means.

And when I sit down to do this here blawg, or any other Highly Important Writing Tasks, I keep three essential tools at my disposal.

Kinda easy to do since they're all online.

Imagine that.

Thought I'd share these resources with you, my fellow "writer."

Dictionary

Thesaurus

Rhyming dictionary

No exaggeration (as if!), I use these tools--the first two especially--at least once every day.

Mind you, this is coming from the fourth grader who used to win all those Dictionary Drills in school.

I SO ROCKED!!!!!!!

(And clocked and mocked and shocked!!!)

See what I mean?

Never ending fun!

In the most nerdy kind of way.

And for a whole variety of tips from "writers" all around the blogosphere, head over to Rocks In My Dryer.

(Blocks in my choir!)

(Oh great. That led me down a trail to quoting The Princess Bride.)

Vizzini: "No more rhyming now, I mean it."

Fezzik: "Anybody want a peanut?"

Please, please pull me out of my incessant movie-quoting head and let me know what writing resources you use.

I'll be grateful. Thankful. Much obliged, really.

And if you need to get that silly movie out of your head, how 'bout spending some time browsing my ever-growing list of randomly useful tips?

As a writer myself - I too use these tools, however....I use ONLY (insert snobbish voice) Merriam-Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/) and I use Word's built-in thesaurus.

I don't have much need for rhyming words and I have never seen The Princess Bride so can't comment on those :)

That is *so* "me". I have the Eats, Shoots, and Leaves desk calendar that I bought for myself!

I also like the online urban dictionary so I can keep up with them youngsters.

Girl, you are my kind of word nerd.

I'm sending the rhyming link to my kids...and tomorrow, I'm sure, will be a very long day...as they say.

Grammar girl is kind of interesting. She offers a daily grammar tip, and it's a nice little refresher on what to do...and what not to do. You can listen to her podcast, or read the transcript by clicking on a topic of interest:

The others have mentioned some interesting ideas. I'll have to think about it next time I use something.

Oh! For Scripture, I use biblegateway.com as a good online resource. But there's something very rewarding about finding it with the physical Bible sitting on my desk.

"As you wish!" I totally love Princess Bride. I am glad to have these resources! Thanks.

I am trying to write a children's book but am also taking an acting class and have learned how much improv is just knowing your synonyms - how to say quickly the same things in various funny ways!
