It Goes Round And Makes Me Merry
Very little excites me.
Sports? Snooze...
Shopping? Ughhhhh...
But if I could combine those two "blahs" into this? I'd be hootin' and hollerin' fer shure.

IT'S A MERRY-GO-ROUND. THAT PUMPS WATER.

Have you ever heard of such?!
I ran across that picture quite by accident, but it totally flipped my lid. A great toy! That pumps water!
Now if this was some kind of useful post, I would tell you that these pumps are changing the lives of children and families all across the world. That there are organizations out there, this very minute, who are raising money to place these pumps in Africa.
But I'd totally be making that up.
(Sheepish grin.)
I fully intended to research the issue, but you know. PATHWORDS.
However!
I know that in my vast, vast readership there are people who care about the global community and who might, just might--find this information useful at some point down the road.
So there!
In addition, there is a see saw (margery daw) that functions as a pump as well:

A see saw!
Oh, my practical heart beats to the image of those pumps. There's so much about them to love.
Sigh...
Now.
I'm certain you're wondering how in the world I came across that picture. Right? Right?
All last summer, my kidsflew off played on the merry-go-round on the park, and it reminded me of the good ol' days of my youth. On *my* grade school playground, there were two merry-go-rounds, and BOTH of them were the kind you could sit on and pump a bar back and forth with your feet and hands.
In the spirit of reminiscing, I kept asking the people I'd bump into at the park if they remembered such a thing.
No. One. Did.
NOT A ONE!
Either *I'm* really old, the *equipment* was really old, or I grew up in the sticks.
Yes, yes, and yes.
So one night, I decided to use this amazing new tool, "Google," and search for "a merry-go-round that pumps."
And voila.
Those are the pictures I found.
(Awwww...)
However!
I did come across this as well:

That picture did my reminiscing heart a world of good, plus it strengthened my ever-present spirit of, "I TOLD YOU SO."
Just look at me, still changing the world, one blog post at a time.
XOXO.

I remember those type of merry-go-rounds. They're so much fun. And I don't think you are that old...LOL.
Glad you had fun remembering those good ole days.
A) Those water pumps are ingenious. Have you ever thought about how much energy we would save if they used fitness equipment in gyms to generate the electricity in the US?
B) I TOTALLY remember that merry-go-round in the sticks! I loved it! It was painted blue and white and had a ton of chipping paint if I remember correctly...of course, I could have made that last part up.
C) The playground I grew up on had the Merry-go-round that you pushed by running and then had to jump on. I remember getting it going so fast it would throw us off.
Great memories - watching the pigtails flying in the wind and your big brother also pumping it to make it spin really fast. Those were innocent times, and neither one of you had a care in the world, right???? Homework, piano, sports, band - I could go on and on, but I will only add the additional work you both put in helping with chores on the farm.
Oh yeah! We had a merry-go-round that you pumped to accelerate at a neighborhood park, when I was a kid. Until the Safety Nazi's took it out.
Rats.
We had real swings - big enough for grown ups. And a real slide, that was HIGH (higher than a grownup). Also gone.
And a huge treehouse, accessed three ways - a rope (vertical and knotted), a fireman's pole (set about 3 feet out, so you had to traverse across the bar to reach it), or the "easy" way - a chain ladder with wooden cross-pieces. Gone.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of using the equipment to pump water :0)
You know what? I could care less about merry-go-rounds (although I have to admit... a merry-go-round that PUMPS WATER?!?!?! WAY COOL...) However, what I do care about is that you make me laugh A LOT... and OUT LOUD. Yes... I am at my computer breaking into random OUT LOUD laughter when reading your blog. You are stinking hilarious. And that is all I have to say about that. (Just thought you'd like to know.)
This is directed to Rhonda - you should have seen her growing up - that was a real trip, and by the time she was a Senior in h.s., she had them rolling in the aisles, and I'm not kidding. She learned her lessons well from her older brother who also has a wild sense of humor. It was NEVER dull at our house.
I think that mery go round was old when I went to school there. Good way to use up stored energy. Teachers loved it.So what if there was a few bumped heads and skinned knees.Taught us teamwork. Push pull push pull and so on.
Hi, Such a wonderful slant on the age old Merry-go-round. I just love all these old fairground fun rides, and I know my grandchildren still love them and will always jump on one at any opportunity (however old they get). I had no idea they were using this as a means of pumping water - lets hope some of them get to the third world!
Because I love them, I have writing and had published, a children's book featuring a Merry-go-round. The kids I have spoken to love my book, and can almost feel the fun of the ride.
Keep up the slant on life!
