Goodwill Does It Again!
**This is one of my favorite posts from last year. Not only am I buried in plastic Easter eggs, kept up all night with feverish, coughing kids, but also this: I hurt my back. FROM CARRYING TOO MANY LIBRARY BOOKS.
See, folks. This is why I DON'T play sports. I can't even be a geek without getting an injury.
Carry on, now. Read about plates.

Everything on my dining room table screams, "the 90s." It starts with the hunter green plates and goes downhill from there. And my plates! They are round!Oh, how out of fashion I am, and always will be. This doesn't mean that I don't like the latest styles, au contraire. But I'm cheap, and I'm green. "Hunter" green, in fact.
We've had this set of dishes for a good ten years. Slowly but surely, they've cracked and chipped to the point we no longer have a large enough set to invite a couple of friends over for dinner.
This is all under the assumption that we "have friends" and would "invite them over."
So I sent The Mister out to buy us a new set of plates. Eighteen hours later, he came home with a truckload of pictures of plates, complete with shots of the price tags.
(You might find this mode of shopping a bit odd, but well, we are odd, and he's a shutterbug. And we have three kids who enjoy shopping for plates about as much as they enjoy eating the broccoli that sits atop them.)
Do you know it costs about 200 gazillion dollars to buy a new set of plates? Because it isn't just the plates you're replacing. It's the trendy and matching place mats, cups, saucers, bowls, and napkins. And once all that is replaced, the dining room table just plain Looks Bad too.
So I quickly grew an even closer attachment to hunter green. And when praying before lunch one day, I blasted out a request for some plates to match the ones we already had.
Because sometimes I like to give God a little "Pop Quiz."
Just to see if he's listening.
(Because sometimes I wonder.)
I headed out to Goodwill that afternoon, taking my six-year-old along with me. That move was just my way of being even more obnoxious, pointing my Mama Finger heavenward and shouting, "Prove it! Prove that you care! Prove you will provide!"
So we sauntered through the secondhand store, and wouldn't you know, in the mismatched hodge podge dishes aisle was a stack of plates. Our plates. Hunter green plates. And just to throw a cherry on top, sitting nearby were a few matching coffee cups as well.
I knelt down, looked my son in the eye and said, "See? See who God is? See what he has done for us? He is good. Good."
Then we shared a smile--and with thankful hearts--paid a pittance for our plates.
And on the ride home, instead of chanting "Goodwill does it again," we had changed our tune.
"God has done it again."
And it felt good to be green. Hunter green.
**Update: Since that day, we have yet to find another plate to match. But we always look.

I love this story! hey, it's not the plate, it's what you put on it anyway...
Yeah God, and yeah Goodwill! I have had similar experiences. I think there is a connection there. =)
I had no idea my dishware was dated. Thanks for putting that thought in my head. Thanks a whole lot. :)
At least they don't have a harvest gold floral border, I guess...Green's my favorite color, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
What a great story! For my birthday this year my mom bought me new dishes and let me pick them out...and then got confused and sent me the wrong ones! Instead of square red, I got round burgundy :)
I LOVE this! God IS good all the time. And He cares about the things we care about!
Our church pastor LOVES to dress nice on Sundays when he preaches. When he was "just starting out" as the saying goes, he needed White, button-down shirts with a collar. But he was broke. So he prayed for white shirts. He went to the Goodwill, and wouldn't you know, he found a PACK of SHRINK-WRAPPED shirts MONOGRAMMED with HIS INITIALS!!!! I got to start shopping at the Goodwill more.
Yay God, yay new-old plates!
My wife (Miss Sniz) does the Goodwill thing, too. If you go enough times, you find some great things. We managed to pick up our rug for our bedroom at Goodwill. It was new and we managed to save about $20.
But, what if your plates and other assorted dinner ware DIDN'T match? That would be ok, too right? And it would be ok if I went out of the house to work in clothes that didn't match--right? Why do I care so much about stuff like that? I think there's a God-given sense of order that we have hotwired in our brains. It's just that it's so easy for us to go overboard with all of it. For instance, if you pet has an outfit that matches one of yours, you've gone overboard.
Cool how God met a need. really cool.
Just wondering...what would your response have been if God hadn't? Would you still have thanked him?
You know...I thought about that, especially since I had my son along with me. *I* know that God is no Santa in the Sky--and would have been perfectly content had there been no hunter green dishes there. I would have thanked God for taking care of us in so many ways.
But the great thing about the matching plates is that they were such a gift to us--a "faith story" of sorts for my son. And that makes the whole thing just that much more special to me.
That is an awesome story!! God is so good to meet even the smallest of our needs (and wants!).
Glad you got your dishes!!
Blessings,
Starr Lapradd
I love your plates. I love God.
He has provided soooo many times in a very similar way for us, I am amazed!
Great story!!
(my first visit)
Alex
You know how I feel about this.
{insert melty, Goodwill-lovin', God-grateful heart}
When He gives us those little things and answers those little prayers, for things that don't *really* matter, I take that as His way of saying, "I love you, Ann," and "See how easy this is for Me? So please know that I'm hearing and working on the big things you're asking me about."
I hate to put words in God's mouth...but you see what I mean.
He loves you...and your willingness to make-do with your '90s decor. But that is, in fact, the story you've just told us in this post.
Thank you for this story. I think your plates are great. Most everything in my kitchen is late '80's early '90's as we married in 1986 and havent replaced a whole lot in that time period (dish related/pots and pans related)
Most of all praise God for the gift he gave you that day!
I love this story. What a wonderful way to teach your child that God listens AND answers, sometimes rather quickly. :)
Great story. Thanks for shring it.
I just bought my round plates last year, and now I find out that they're 'out'?!!
Man- I need to do my blog reading before I go shopping online again!
Love this story - I used to doubt that God cared much about things like the color I wanted our house to be painted or something pretty I desired - but reading the Old Testament convinced me - God is INTO details - He designed a very complicated and beautiful house for Himself (the tabernacle) - so of course He'd provide some Hunter Green plates for you since you asked.
What a fabulous story! God IS so good!!
I love that you found your new dishes at Goodwill. Mine came from a clearance sale at Walgreens. I got a set of 10 large plates, small plates, bowls, and 2 serving bowls for $38.
Reading your story also reminded me of one of the smartest things my dad ever taught me. "God answers all your prayers. Sometimes he just says no."
That is just so sweet. It's like a kiss on the cheek from God. :-)
What a precious story!
And you know, those plates can be made to look all kinds of different with various colors of linens. Green goes with many things!
Yeah! What a great story! I love it. And way to be proud of your hunter green. It's not easy being green.
Not to copy everyone else but, I love this story! Not only did you recognize God's handiwork but you got the chance to point it out to your son too. How often do we miss the chances to "point God out" to our kids?! Way to go!
Yeah - God Rocks! How cool that the creator of the universe cares enough to point out some hunter green plates for you! And good on you for sharing it with your son! I love it when God does that, and I love sharing that with my kids!
Oh, this post REALLY made me smile!
Steph
This one made me smile again! glad you linked it.
beautiful!
Nice story! Gos does care about the little things.
A couple of years ago, I had a similar experience...except I was lamenting the fact that I never got more than 4 pieces of "MY" china that I picked for our wedding.
God and I had been round and round about this one. I *knew* I didn't need anything more...we have a TON of handed-down dinnerware which works just fine.
I was working at Walmart at the time, and "happened" to catch the fact that some dinnerware was going on sale...I was able to get 3 complete, 4 place setting sets for a grand total of....$6.00!!
I would NEVER have been able to get them otherwise...
YAY, God!!!
What an inspiring post! Sometimes we get so busy, we forget that God works in little ways, too.
Love, love, love your blog! You are cracking me up! My kids are wondering what in the world is Mama LAUGHING OUTLOUD ABOUT??
I'll be visiting often!
I have a very eclectic set of plates. Two remaining from my thrift store find in MN, four off-white Corelle plates from my hubby's bachelor days, a set from my mom's co-worker from like the 70's (okay, maybe the 80's), and my most recent snowman plates (There was a snowman playing the string bass, and I couldn't resist)! But I LOVE your Hunter green plates, too!
These are the little things that I LOVE to see God do!
Its not about being grateful or ungrateful OR content or discontent.... it is just a teeny reminder from Him, that He is indeed mindful of the little things in this life and HE IS THERE!
These little things are SO important for children!
How precious our Lord is, to show Himself to our children in these little things- for in light of eternity, they are little but OH! how loud they speak to our heart and faith!
Thank u so much for sharing this, it encouraged my heart!..made me remember...
Love it!
I prayed for an extra table and some chairs. My mom called and said her bosses were remodeling the office and did I want a couple chairs? Yep. A week later... did I want two small tables? Yep. Then, a couple more chairs? Yep.
All for free.
I know, I know... in the words of my pastor, "God is not your celestial bell-hop", but He does care about us, and what we need... and want :-0)
