Trash Bowl
In each house we've lived in, there has never been a convenient place for my big trash receptacle to sit.
[Sure, I could have used the word "container", but "receptacle" is far geekier.]
It is either 20 steps away from my food prep area, or too big to fit in a cabinet, or too out in the open for the kids to play in, or too stinky and gross to look at, et cetera, ad nauseam.
So I took a clue from that groovy gal Rachel Ray, and started using a Trash Bowl on the counter. I sit a big bowl right beside me while I empty packages and dice veggies. Into the bowl goes anything I would normally throw in the trash (and not down the drain). It always amazes me, and somewhat depresses me, how much trash I collect as I prep each meal. But this nifty trash bowl is easy to dump and wash out once dinner is done, and having it there on the counter saves me a gazillion steps to the Big Stinking Trash Bin on the other side of the room.

Do you have a compost pile? If I did, I'd walk out to the pile and dump the contents of my trash bowl on it.
I love that Rachael Ray! I made one of her recipes tonight. And you're right. Even though my trash can is right behind me, the garbage bowl is faster and contains the mess better!
That is a great idea - I remember seeing it once but thanks for reminding me. I've taken to having a small trashcan (bedroom size) that i move to where I'm cooking but this is even easier, I think :)

That would work well!
I use something similar: a plastic bag from my stockpile of old grocery bags. It can easily be tied off to seal in bad odors and thrown out before the large trash cans fill up.
this is such a great tip, i do this too. (love rachael ray!) i don't do this, but maybe you would -- many people save all the veggie ends/pieces they cut off and save them to make stock. you can even throw them in a baggie in the freezer til you have enough for a good stock. since you would straing it all out anyway it doesn't matter if the pieces are tough or whatever. (plus the composting idea is good. although i've never gotten that together either!)
Found your blog via WFMW. Glad I did.
