Canning with Kermit
Three boxes of canning jars just frog-jumped to my house, thanks to a friend who was cleaning out her basement. She doesn't even know about my Green Geekiness, and yet she figured I could put them to use.
Now too bad I don't have a garden.
Or a canner.
Or any local produce.
Or the know-how to can.
But I've got jars. Lots and lots of jars!
And now they are sitting around my house, cluttering up the place until my pale-greenness becomes a nice shade of swamp. Until then, the jars are fair game for the kids. Especially my kids, who have never understood that *toys* are made to be played with.
So here's what I do know about these jars:

So here's what I do know about these jars:
Squeezing Mama's legs with 'jar tongs' and saying "Does this hurt? Does this hurt?" is a fun way for kids to pass the time. It's not easy being green.
Stacking several jars will raise Mama's blood pressure. And her voice.
Banging and rolling jars makes baby happy and Mama insane.
Throwing a glass jar will make it shatter. And give Mama a little something extra to do during her day.

I rescued my grandmother's jars from a trip to the dump. I didn't have to heart to throw them away and neither did she. Is there anyone who can actually use 5,000 jars collected from decades of "Green Geekiness?"
Well my green friend, when do you want to start? I'll be glad to share what I know. I make lots of meals and can them in quart jars, as it's usually the perfect amount for the kids and I for a main dish. If you have a vacuum sealer, they store fresh fruits, veggies, granolas, specialty flours, nuts, etc. really nice for a long time, too...
Anything that you could put in a bowl with plastic wrap, or in a gladware type container can usually go in a jar.
Great for leftovers. And say, if they get left in the fridge a little too long, the glass can be completely disinfected and de-yucked. Unlike plastic.
Specially good for tomato based products. No horrible orange ring around the top.
oh and theymake a lovely gift. Do a google seach of "journal jars" and you'll find a nice unique gift. I love them.
oh and cookies in a jar too. :)
If you have extra jars or need jars, try Freecycle.com and sign up with a group in your area. I am surprised how fast they go whenever someone offers them.
